What Is A CV Axle

When it comes to your vehicle, there are many different components to be aware of. From whining to clunking to screeching, failing components can make noises, this could be a sign letting you know the CV axles need to be replaced. A common replacement part in front-wheel drive vehicles is the CV axle. Today, we are going to look at what a CV axle is, what symptoms you can expect from a failing CV axle, and what it costs to replace a CV axle.

What Is A CV Axle

What Is A CV Axle?

A CV Axle, or constant velocity axle, allows your transmission to drive the front wheels while still allowing for your vehicle to turn smoothly. CV axles have bearings that allow for a wide range of motion and angles to provide both power and turning abilities. CV axles differ from straight axles seen in rear-wheel-drive cars whose job is to simply transfer power to non-steering wheels. A CV axle looks similar to a straight axle, but with a CV joint on each end.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Failing CV Axle?

Due to the construction of a CV axle, the CV joints are going to be housed inside a rubber boot that covers the joint. These can become torn over time, allowing the grease to escape and dirt and grime to enter the boot. This causes your joint to wear out and fail. This can lead to the following symptoms:

  • Clicking/Ticking Sounds

  • Grease On The Inside Of Your Wheel

  • Popping When Turning

  • Vibrations That Worsen With Increase Speed

  • Jolting While Driving

What Causes A CV Axle To Fail?

Over time, this constant wear and tear can break down the bearings and cause them to bend or fall apart. A loss of grease and the presence of contaminants inside of the CV joint are the number 1 cause of CV axle failure. While you can drive for a while with a worn-out CV axle, once it goes out, it can leave you stranded.

How Much Does It Cost To Replace A CV Axle?

Replacing a CV axle can cost anywhere between a few hundred bucks up to over $1,000 in some cases when taking into account parts and labor. Of course, for those who are mechanically inclined, you might be able to tackle this one yourself. However, this is going to be a more involved install, so most people will need to take it to a reputable shop to have the work completed.
