4 Symptoms Of Bad Motor Mount

Updated: Sep 5, 2023

The engine mounts in your vehicle are essential to keeping a smooth, comfortable ride. Made from metal and rubber, these components secure the engine to your vehicle's body and absorb vibrations so that they don't transfer to the body. Without a quality motor mount, you would still feel all of the engine's vibrations. Unfortunately, exposure to the elements and over time, engine mounts start to wear out and break down. When this happens, various symptoms will start to appear that can affect your driving experience.

Unusual Vibrations

One of the first signs that your engine mount is going bad is abnormal vibrations. The mount absorbs most of the vibrations caused by the combustion cycle, so without them working properly, you may feel some jittering or shaking while driving - especially when you're idling or braking. This could worsen over time if you don't take steps to address it quickly.

Engine Bay Noises

Another common symptom of worn-down engine mounts is strange noises coming from under your car's hood or engine bay. When the rubber breaks down on your mount or becomes brittle due to age and weather exposure, it won't be able to cushion as much noise, which could result in loud clunking or rattling sounds coming from close by. Additionally, if your mounts are loose enough, they can move around freely rather than stay fixed in place. In that case, this can amplify certain noises even further as parts shift and rub against one another during acceleration and deceleration. This might sound like metal-on-metal contact and could mimic an engine knock.

Engine Damage

Inadequate support for your engine can lead to oil leaks due to significant vibration when driving at faster speeds, such as on highways or freeways. Not only will oil leak out onto other components near the mount, but it can also seep into places where it doesn't belong, causing major damage such as corrosion on electrical pieces near where it escaped from - leading to expensive repairs bills down the road if left unchecked for too long.

Bumpier Ride

If your vehicle has a rougher ride than usual, this is a clear symptom that there is something wrong with your vehicle. While this could be suspension related, your motor mounts should not be ruled out as a suspect. As your motor mounts wear out, they can cause vibrations and engine shaking that can cause your entire vehicle to experience a decrease in ride quality.
